Amazing turnout for Imagine Tomorrow

WOW- what an incredible turnout we had at the Imagine Tomorrow Workshop, the official kick-off event for the Forward OP process. More than 550 members of the community came out to get energized and share their big ideas for the city’s future.

As participants arrived at the beginning of the night, we asked them to share, in one word, what they love most about OP. Some of the top ideas included the schools, parks and green spaces, safety, and affordability.
Then Peter Kageyama got everyone’s creative juices flowing with his keynote address, “Love Where You Live”, about the connections between emotional attachment and economic vitality in cities.

Participants then got the opportunity to meet their neighbors and have a discussion in small groups. Everyone wrote what they hoped the headlines would be for Overland Park in 20 years. People dreamed big, imagining everything from being the most livable city in America to hosting the 2038 Olympics to becoming the country’s first car-free city. Then, they brainstormed a list of big ideas about how to make OP an even better place in the future. The activity generated over a thousand great ideas, which will lay the groundwork for the first draft of plan content.

All the input from this first round will be analyzed by the Steering Committee to start to build a framework for the community vision and strategic plan. This information will be shared in the second round of engagement in April (more details soon).
